Mari Is An Irresponsible Host

Mari started moving to Holdfire, what at the end of March? It’s 16 April and Mari’s still not done moving her hostees.

Truth about it is, Mari doesn’t put her website at such a priority anymore. Mari puts staring at the sky1 above her website. Perhaps it’s a beneficial change, seeing as how Mari has been totally addicted to the Internet2 , but perhaps it’s just lazy and irresponsible. Mari is inclined to say it’s the latter.

Mari has actually been totally rethinking subdomain hosting at all since the move. Mari has some awesome hostees, but Mari feels that they’re being unfairly penalized for having Mari’s domain name in their URL. Plus, moving has made Mari realize that Mari’s life is a total mess. It’s reflected on her websites, and if Mari can barely keep up with her own stuff, how is Mari supposed to keep up with ump-teen hostees?

Bottom line: Mari is a shitty host, guys. If you want to stay with Mt, that’s fine, but Mari would suggest you find a better host if Mari’s irresponsible hosting practices have been bothering you, ’cause Mari’s hosting is going straight down the drain. And to those of you who have been bothered by this, Mari is sincerely sorry. This is just totally stupid of Mari, and there’s really no excuse.

This post was semi-triggered by Josh of inkspot moving to silencios.org. It’s not that Mari’s mad at Josh, Mari is quite glad that he found a better host. And please go visit him! 3 It’s just that this was a wake-up call for Mari. If Mari doesn’t manage to re-add everybody, and fast, Mari’s going to look like even more of a loser. 4

  1. Partially for the Astronomy class that Mari’s taking! []
  2. And it really screwed up Mari’s life. Mari now has no chance of getting into a decent college and is in deep trouble at school due to doing essentially nothing but play on the Internet for about 2 years. []
  3. Mari’s not linking ’cause of the Google spank - Mari would just be spreading more bad karma, and Mari imagines Josh would appreciate it.  Plus, anyone that would be interested would know how to type inkspot dot silencios dot org into their address bar. *hint* []
  4. If that’s possible. []

    Awwww…Mari don’t be so hard on yourself! I still think you’re awesome. =3

    I’m totally okay with you taking this long to move. It happens, your website isn’t exactly the most important thing in the world, and I think that if anyone has been giving you a hard time about it not to worry. I wouldn’t say many of the hostees are that difficult to get along with. If you feel you don’t want to host anymore then I’m sure everyone will understand =)

    Sorry about the semi double post. My internet is slightly terrible.

  • Pavan on

    Ah don’t worry :) You’re still an awesome hostess… and it doesn’t matter how long you take. Everyone has a life, it doesn’t matter if your online life takes a back seat. I don’t really mind how long it takes to get my site back up really… Also, you shouldn’t feel obliged to host people. If you don’t want to then you can stop- *we’re* the ones who owe you, anyway. ^_^

    @Sam

    Well, no one really has been giving Mari a hard time about it. There have been a few instances where Mari’s opened up Thunderbird and gone, “LOLZ guys, hold on for a second! I have to go shopping 60 miles away and I have a research paper to do AFTER that today!” but it’s never really annoyed Mari; it’s just been funny ’cause those few (three or four) hostees were really itching to get back to work. Like little kids that are told to wait and you know they absolutely can’t.

    Mari knows you’re being nice, but Mari would have to disagree. Mari’s had no rules posted at her hosting site for about 7 months, been utterly slow to answer hosting emails, and been generally irresponsible about things for a while now.

    I’ll tell you what I think, even if you don’t care :P.
    I’ve seen ( not experienced ) some other personal/blog site that offered hosting and I must say you are one of the best. Why? First you offer a hosting quality ( and quantity ) far better than all the other. And the best thing is you are a really nice person. If others want to stop being with you, it’s their choice, but for those that will remained her, it will mean they appreciate you and appreciate your work. And don’t feel irresponsible like that, it’s only a website :). Maybe you put a lot of effort on this but most people here will say like me, life come first :).
    And I’m gonna say this and maybe others do think like me, you are doing a GREAT work and continue like this :) *hug*

    I know what you mean about the eager children metaphor. Haha, I’m fairly eager to get my site back up but I’ll wait as long as I have to. I really enjoy being hosted here and I have to say you’re a good person. I agree with Jonathan whole heartedly =). I seriously don’t think I could have said it any better myself!

  • Mari on

    @Jonathan

    Mari can’t really offer that much quantity anymore, but Mari will offer whatever she can.

    Ah, thanks. Mari will continue subdomain hosting.

  • Mari on

    @Sam

    Aww, thanks. Shucks, you guys make Mari smile. :D

  • Sam on

    We try! I mean for hosting umpteen people and putting up with every last one of us. I think making you smile is the least we could do =).

  • Jonathan on

    I think the least we could do is show you how grateful we are :)
    Now go back to work and bring us our websites back ! 8-) ( little joke there )
    Just don’t forget to have fun and smile ! :D

  • Tammi on

    I think you have been an absoloutely amazing host; for me at least (and especially). Since… considering my DNS screwup, you’ve been rather patient, which makes me happy. :)

    And I do have to say that hosting so many people could *not* be easy. Emailing everyone was work in itself, and I even started a list with who I contacted and their responses. With a colour code.

  • Holly on

    Lol, I’m glad that I don;t host people, I’d be afraid that I’d do something and accidentally break all their websites, and then they’d come to NZ and hunt me down and kick me! o.O
    I hop you get everything sorted out though, eventually. :)

    I posted a similar comment on the blog of another person who also just switched hosts; but if both your old and new hosts use CPanel, you can usually just ask them to transfer your sites. Most good hosts do that for free and in a very short time, too. :)

  • Mari on

    @Vickie

    That’s the problem, Mari’s old host had their own admin panel which was not Cpanel-transfer compatible.

    Hey sweet Mari,

    I’m commenting on your previous post (comments are closed)… RE: your Google PR of 0.

    I do understand what you mean. I did one paid post (just 1 in my whole recently miserable blogging existence, lol), however I tagged those links “nofollow” SOON AFTER. This means that Google is OK with that as I’m not giving that site any link love now. Since that 1 post, I’m iffy now with PPP posts (they totally suck the joy out of blogging for me). And my first PPP post was a joke actually… I was making fun of PPP posts while making $100 bucks for it (Christmas gift to the guy who helped me write it). Ah, the hypocrisy! LOL. I sold a few links on my sidebar to pay for high speed Internet… so that I wouldn’t have to do PPP posts ever again. Yech. I’m pretty sure that lowered my PR (why it remains at 4).

    According to my pal (who plays with SEO Google strategies), I should’ve had a PR of 6 based on the number of backlinks I have, however… since I’m generous with giving out free dofollow links (and linking to what Google terms “bad neighbourhoods”), I remain at 4… and possibly… because of my links generosity… I myself may be tagged a bad neighborhood in the process. Oh well. You try to be nice… and Google gives ya shit. :P

    It’s called allowing “blog links spam”.

    In the end, my opinion is… drop the dofollow plugin if you really care about PR, but really… don’t worry so much about PR on your HOME PAGE. Most SEO experts say it’s more important if your actual posts (the PR on those posts) are ranking high (being found in search engines) via “keywords”. There are lots of plugins that help you with SEO.

    Anyway… when you think about it… good blog content is king. Plus developing strong communication with your readers (blog hopping/commenting) is key. And having fun with blogging? :)

    Passion… we (bloggers) need to put that back into blogging and not worry about PR and popularity. If we do, it will show in the quality of our entries… which will then attract more readers… and possibly, well… backlinks will result… and then higher PR?

    It’s a circle, eh? (OMG, I’m going to start singing a song from that movie… The Lion King, lol).

    Much respect,
    Massa P

    P.S. Wow, this dumb comment was way too long and it had way too many typos and ellipses.

  • FruityOaty on

    Addendum… also, I can’t really say I totally hate people who do paid posts. I won’t judge ‘em. Wanting to make money through writing is legit. It’s just that I dislike blogs where over 50% of the posts are paid posts (and poorly written to boot)…. and I tend to stay away from them. I’ll only visit those types of sites only for a few bloggers.

    i.e. if you started barfing up paid posts all over your lovely site, yeah… I’d still visit it… even if it’s like the equivalent of a… leper colony.

    :P
