Record Label Sued for Piracy

Anyone else just love that title? Mari can’t get enough of it. :D

Record label Sony BMG, one of the most vocal and ferocious opponents of music piracy, has been accused of using unlawfully installed programs on its computers by a small software company.

French company PointDev, which makes applications for Microsoft Windows, claims to have discovered pirated versions of its software installed on Sony BMG computers and is suing the label for €300,000 ($514,910).

PointDev said it was alerted to the illegal software after a Sony BMG employee rang the software company’s technical support number for assistance and gave a pirated product key when asked for a customer number, French website 01net reported.

A raid on the French offices of Sony BMG in January revealed that almost half of the software used by the company may be unlawfully installed, according to the report.

Source. And thank you, Fark. ♥

Just another reason that we all hate record labels, ?
What do you think? Hilarious?1

  1. Oh, and by the way, Misstuned is slowly getting back online after moving to Holdfire! Yay~! []

    @Becca

    It’s okay. You’re kinda sorta allowed to not read the post, cause you’re a hostee. ^O^

    Ok so we should not download music if we don’t have the real copy but they DO use hacked softwares … ironic AND weird.

    and by the way welcome back online ! :)

    @Jonathan

    Oh the irony of it all. They spend so much time suing people for piracy and here they are the pirates themselves. Arr matey, that be foolish.

    Either way, glad your back Mari! =D

    That’s a good taste of their own medicine. It’s not just irony, it’s hypocrisy. To make sure people don’t illegally download our songs, we should illegally download someone else’s software. Hahaha.

    LOL of the year!

    YES you’re back :) Hope you’re not having too much trouble/didn’t have too much trouble.

    And at the post.

    That’s…complete stupidity.

    A big company like that should be able to afford the proper software, instead of being stingy.

    But it’s so like human nature to rant against something when they do the exact same thing. Hypocrites :/

    Anyways~ can’t wait until the whole site is back up :3

    Lol. FAIL.
    Is it really terrible that when I read about “piracy” the first thing that comes to mind is a guy with one leg and a parrot!?
    Yarr!

  • Kaisa on

    This made me do my little dance I like to call: “Haha! In your face, big corporate bastards!!” :) I’m all for paying for music, but sometimes record labels go a little too far (the sucky copy protection laws etc.) so it’s nice to see them get a taste of their own medicine :D

  • Mari on

    @Holly

    Their fail is macro-worthy. And when you think of a stereotypical silly pirate every time you hear the word “piracy”, it just means you’re awesome. XD

  • Mari on

    @Kaisa

    Indeed. Paying for music is grand, but the record companies have to go around with tinfoil hats and make all kinds of stupid “solutions”…*rant* -yeah, it is nice to see them get a taste of their own medicine.
