Mari Watching Idol?!
Yes, Mari has been sucked into reality television. Even after so vehemently idiotically dissing it only a year ago.
If you hate reality TV, for f@$#’s sake, don’t read this.
Writers Strike: Thank God It Ended
During the Writer’s Strike, Mari got really desperate for good TV. After the abrupt ending of Season 2 of Heroes1, Mari sought anything to record on her DVR. Mari watched Mythbusters, Paranormal State2, Ghost Hunters International, and even Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann religiously.
How American Idol Was Added to Mari’s DVR
When things were at their darkest in the midst of a terrible writer’s strike, Mari realized that one of the most popular shows (that Mari had been hearing about for years) was about to start up. American Idol was airing auditions soon, and Mari set her DVR to record them all.
Mari half-heartedly tuned in and watched on DVR about half of the auditions. Mari, in a fit of boredom, after learning that despite the end of the strike, neither Heroes or Pushing Daisies would be coming back until fall, decided to watch Idol last night.
Mari actually liked it. It was a pleasant semi-distraction from Astronomy3, and Mari found something to talk about with her Mum. Idol Season 7 suddenly became Mari’s favorite show.
Last Night’s Idol
So, here’s Mari’s review of Idol, from Tuesday 11 March 20084.
She’s good. She worried Mari a little at first with “Got to Get You into My Life“, but found a groove and made it work.
Mari gives her a 7/10He really entertained Mari with “She’s a Woman“. Really well. Mari was surprised when he did the falsetto wail at the end. He’s great!
Mari gives him a 8.5/10She gives Mari a bit of the “just another asian chick at karaoke”5 feel with “In My Life“. Mari bets she’s good, this just wasn’t her best performance.
Mari gives her a 5/10Blaaaaaah. He just ruined “If I Fell” for Mari, forever. Plus, he’s got the “douche with a guitar” thing going…
Mari gives him a 3/10Mari was thinking, “Oh, God, she’s Irish. Is she going to sound Irish?” and then she took the stage and she just rocked Mari’s brains out with “Come Together“. WHOOO!! Strong vocals, and her performance was really, really fun.
Mari gives her a 9/10Rock star!!!!!! He was absolutely spectacular with “Eleanor Rigby“. He’s a true vocalist, and he’s best suited to frontman, which he is. Just, wow. Love him.
Mari gives him a 9.5/10She’s just adorable with “Let It Be“. Mari didn’t love her performance, but Mari saw the heart there. And that was just too cute.
Mari gives her a 8/10Mari’s un-favorite ex-male stripper. He murdered “I Saw Her Standing There“. It was like Gospel!Beatles, and ugh, Mari hated it. Definitely overdone.
Mari gives him a 2/10Oh. My. God. She rocks. She rocked “You Can’t Do That” She needs a band of legendary proportions to play for her so she can just kick the hell out of any songs she comes by.
Mari gives her a 9.5/10It was kinda boring, but he could have done better. “Across the Universe” happens to be a newly-discovered favorite song of Mari’s6
Mari gives him a 7/10…
…
WTF. Country!Beatles? What’s worse, Country!”Eight Days A Week” What was she smoking? Plus, the tempo was all f#$^ed up. Though, she sounded cute for a country-sorta-voice.
Mari gives her a 3/10…is this guy 17 or 30? His voice sounds so developed, so much older than him. He’s got that “strong voice in a small package” way. He stumbled and tried the Stevie Wonder version “We Can Work It Out“, but he’s obviously a very strong singer, this just wasn’t his song at all.
Mari gives him a 5/10
Thank God the ex-stripper (David Hernandez) went home. But you know, he wasn’t that terrible at singing, just at performing…
Do you watch Idol?
What did you think about 11 March’s performances, and 12 March’s results?
- Mari’s absolute favorite show. [↩]
- Which recently began recording in HD only, and Mari doesn’t know how to fix it. This is majorly ticking Mari off, since Mari can’t watch HD, having an older TV. [↩]
- Though, Mari does love Astronomy, just the review questions are awful… [↩]
- as written on 11 March 2008, right at the end of the show [↩]
- Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but Mari was disappointed. [↩]
- Thanks to the movie of the same name. Normally, you can’t tie Mari down hard enough to get her to watch musicals, but Mari loves The Beatles enough to have liked this one. [↩]

In Finland, the American Idol episodes are shown about a week later, so I’ll have to wait until next week to have an opinion about the newest episodes
Not that I really watch this show. I watched the auditions, as I always do, because I like laughing at people and Simon is hot. The rest of the show doesn’t interest me too much. I watch it, if nothing else is on.
@Kaisa
Oh, really? Because of the subtitles? (Do they subtitle them?)
XD Someone phoned in with “Simon is sexy” as a question on Wednesday’s Idol.
Pretty much nothing else is on at the moment thanks to the strike. It killed all of Mari’s favorite shows for the season. Mari also likes to save a few shows for other nights, due to the lack of remotely entertaining programming at the moment. Mythbusters and Ghost Hunters, which are also on Wednesdays at 9, tend to sit on Mari’s DVR until Thursday or Friday nights.
I guess I’m one of a very small amount of people that the Writer’s strike didn’t bother. Heck, I didn’t even notice it until it had been on for a while. lol
Idol is okay sometimes, but I can’t stay hooked on it.
@Joana
Lol! XD
Ah.
Mari has just one question. When is Idol on out west? At the same time as on the east coast?
I was happy that the writer’s strike ended too. Since that meant that a lot of my shows were coming back, especially Pushing Daisies, but i was hoping that the shows would return earlier then next fall >.< Anyway im happy that their back.
Hmm Idol 7… well i havent really been following it. The last episode i saw was when David Archuleta sang Imagine, which i thought was wonderful and yeah i was hoping he’d sing something more challenging. (I guess he didn’t)That episode featured Danny Noriega and your critique doesn’t include him sooo i guess your further ahead then me.
