Net Neutrality: Still an Issue
This definitely isn’t the first time Mari has blogged about this: First post, later post. To think that it’s been an issue this long and is still not resolved depresses Mari.
Net Neutrality? Say What?
In case you’ve been under a rock in a dark, dark cave - miles away from any other cavemen - Net Neutrality is the idea that the Internet should be free, and all traffic should be treated equally.
Now that we have that out of the way, this all-important principle has been in jeopardy since a 2005 decision by the Federal Communications Commission. Since it was dropped -and some Internet geek(s) noticed, thank you, anonymous geek(s)♥- the big telcos are lobbying to block reinstatement of this principle into law. Don’t think it’s imaginary. They’ve already got their big plans lined up, which you can read about here.
So, what’s happening with it now to make you blog?
A bill called the “Internet Freedom Preservation Act 2008″ (HR 5353) was introduced on 12 Feb 20081. This bill would protect Net Neutrality. The only catch is there are only 60 days to create support for it. So, if nothing has been done by 12 April 2008, it dies.
That means, current US citizens of voting age, it’s your time to do something. (This includes Mari) We have to contact our Congresscritters and beg them to support HR 5353, “Internet Freedom Preservation Act 2008″.
Source of all info.
Have you heard of Net Neutrality?
Did it drop off your radar after you placed the sign on your site?
What do you think about Net Neutrality?

Isn’t it great when you have to beg your ‘congresscritters” (i lurve that by the way) to do something? I’ve heard about this before, I signed something like this petition when it first came out, and never heard about it again. Just signed it again, maybe my action will help.
@Julie
Yeah. We shouldn’t have to beg them to get up off their butts and help us. Isn’t that why we elect them to office in the first place? To serve us? Lazy bums.
(Mari loves that word too. Mari first saw it on BoingBoing, and sorta unofficially adopted it into her vocabulary.)
Thanks for signing it again, Julie! Every bit of help counts.
I signed the petion as well, like Julie, but then it seemed like that effort came to a crashing halt. Thank you for continuing to keep a watch on this for us and providing that page with the ready-made message to shoot off to our congressmen and women.
I took advantage of it and sent one off to mine.
@Joana
Yay, thanks Joana!
Yeah, the ready-made messages for the congresscritters are so helpful. <3 FreePress for those.
