On PayPerPost

Emz got to it first. Mari’s been thinking about PPP all week, and decided to put her true experience into words. This is for the people that have wondered what PPP is really like. This is not paid for, it’s inspired by Mari’s experiences and given a kick onto the front page by Emz’s post.

For someone with their own blog, PPP looks really good, right? What looks better than those sweet greenbacks1? For most people, not much. Mari’s been doing it since May2, and Mari’s found out that PayPerPost isn’t all skipping down the yellow brick road, Dorothy.

There are rules. Let Mari say that again. THERE ARE RULES. It may seem simple at first, but eventually, if you’re a strong-willed person, the innumerable rules will start to rub you the wrong way. Mari won’t even get into the rules you have to follow just to get in.

The rules that annoy Mari most often are: the 30 day period after you take the opportunity (often shortened to opp) before you get paid. Yes. 30 days. PayPerPost is not instant money. If you needed money today you should have done some opps last month.

The next most annoying thing is the post approval process. Many times, your posts will be rejected for seemingly no reason. In regards to your rejected post, you have to investigate to find out what crazy hoop you forgot to jump through this time. Mari had quite a few posts rejected for “not being disclosed”. Apparently, a category is not enough. This MORE than ticked Mari off. The minute someone starts changing how Mari runs her site, the relationship starts to go sour.

Another rejection of post problem Mari had that really ticked Mari off was not allowing any other links within the post. It’s in Mari’s blogging style to always link back to any relevant posts on her site to explain something she’s talking about. Apparently that’s not allowed in Sponsored Posts. Mari was so ticked off she was about to go ask the sponsor if it was alright if Mari ran her blog the way she wanted to.

Some of the opportunities aren’t that easy either. They’re buying a post from you, so they can pretty much make you jump through as many hoops as they can think of. You think you know what you’re doing when you start writing paid posts, but the sponsors can really throw you a curve ball. There’s always a required link, but they can make you post pictures and use specific links to get the Google PageRank they want for the phrases or keywords they want…and it can turn into a hassle if you don’t read every single sentence.

Mari’s final problem is the lack of good opportunities. You have to be really quick and get up real early to get the good money. To make the most of PPP, you have to post sponsored posts the maximum times per day with a normal post in between each…and it just gets to be a hassle. Mari has stuff to do. Mari can’t be on PPP.com all day looking for the good payouts with reputable sponsors.

Now, Mari’s not saying PPP sucks. No, not even close. It’s the only way Mari’s able to make any money at this point. (Mari couldn’t get hired by McDonalds, even if she stuck candy to her resume.) Mari’s just warning you: it’s not all a cake walk in the tea park. It is a job. As with any job, you have to really compete and really bend over backwards to make the relationship between you and your boss (PPP) work. If you don’t play well with others, like Mari, you’ll have some friction. Mari just has to remember that PPP is the one arranging the payment and cool her head off when things go wrong.

Of course, Mari can’t forget, what you all want to know is does PPP work: YES~! The only reason Mari hasn’t had her checking account go into the red is because they do pay out. Mari has made 140 dollars with PayPerPost so far3.

1 Have you seen that Kia commercial “save the greenbacks”?
2 Here’s the category so you can see how many of these posts Mari has done.
3 That’s admittedly not much, but Mari is lazy.

    Joana notices that Mari’s comment form is doing some funny things on this page but not on others. Open tag somewhere maybe?

    Joana can be disgruntled with PPP too at times but it’s the company that has given Joana the most opportunities. Joana suggests that Mari, and others, just not put all their eggs in one basket. Joana works with multiple companies so if she cannot find anything at PPP that fits her and her blogs that’s okay because she is covered elsewhere. Savvy?

    Joana feels the need to point out that categories have never qualified for “disclosure” which is why you can do a sitewide disclosure policy. Although Joana does admit she doesn’t like that if an advertiser considers a category as in-post disclosure ppp will concede to them and have the blogger remove it. -_-

    @Joana

    Bingo. Unclosed small tag. Thanks for the tip.

    Mari does try to work with other companies, they just never have any opps for Mari. Then again, Mari’s only ever tried Smorty besides PPP. Mari’s been thinking about joining one of the others.

    And Mari did, but they still said she wasn’t disclosing, just because they can’t use a search button…

    …If that happened, Mari would quit. PPP will not change the way Mari blogs any further. Mari’s already disgruntled at them.

    Emz thanks Mari for the insight into PPP. :)
    Emz really doesn’t think it’s something she could do properly - ie, would constantly fail to adhere to the ‘rules’ - and so would never make any money out of it!

    But it’s good to know it does work. :)
    Emz hopes Mari’s cashflow get’s better so that PPP isn’t keeping Mari’s account out of the red.

    @Emz

    You’re welcome to it.

    Well, they’re pretty forgiving. Mari’s had posts rejected three times that she was able to submit and still get paid for.

Please take care to read the Commenting Policy before you comment. FAILURE TO DO SO and subsequent violation of will make you look like an idiot. And I'll point it out and laugh so hard I cry.
