Gmail Opened Registration

They’ve opened the floodgates. Mari just noticed that Gmail has open registration. In case you have yet to, Yahoo, Live.com, and Hotmail (do they even exist anymore) users, GO GET A GMAIL ACCOUNT.

Now Mari doesn’t have to mail invitations to herself at a Yahoo! account if she needs to give her family/friends Gmail accounts. Too bad Mari already set up Gmail accounts for her brother, mother, and father.

Curiously enough, they have yet to disable or remove invites. Hmm.

    I was curious about that! I still have 50 invites, but what’s the point if they opened registration?

    lol… it is about time. Google held their memberships by invite only for a long time like a virgin in a locked steel chastity belt. I no longer use my old Gmail account. It just gathers thousands of spams. I imagine it is full now.

    I got invited ages ago, by a friend. And then, if I need a new one, I just invite myself using a different email address. But, now I use Google Apps. This blog entry explained how to setup my mail on Google Apps.

    So, basically, my email address is email@mysite.com, but I access it through Google, and it looks like a regular Gmail account!

    I wonder what’ll happen now since their e-mails are now public?

    Oh well… at least anyone can get one now. :P I thought a lot of people had G-Mail already, ha.

    Silly! That’s what spam filters are for. Mari found an excellent set on WordPress.org for use in WP’s spam filters before Akismet was invented…and it’s saved Mari’s email accouns from almost all spam.

    @Josh

    That’s a good idea. Mari will eventually be using Google Apps, but Mari’s really happy with normal Gmail.

    @Cynthia

    Probably tons of fake robot signups. Well, that and a bunch more 10 year olds from hotmail will come to gmail.

    A lot of people do. But a lot of people had no idea how to get an invite.

    Omigawd. That’s nice that they opened registration.. but now the novelty of having a gmail account will have worn off. And now there’ll be gmail robots and gmail spam.. ugh >

  • Maria on Reply to this comment

    @Amy
    Actually, there are bots now with @gmail emails. I see them all the time in my SPAM folder. =T

    Yeah, the whole novelty of Gmail has definitely weaned off. I’m thinking about doing GoogleApps, but honestly, I don’t use that much bandwidth to have to worry about that. It’s only in one of those freak incidents that have happened twice to me. (Still don’t know what caused my bandwidth to reach 1GB in less than two days…)

    I most likely won’t be signing up only because I have enough emails, you know? I have one Yahoo, three Hotmail (family, old junk, new junk), one school email, and my domain emails. Wayyyy too many now.

    Oh know, it’s going to be like VOX - I used to like it, when you had to get invited, but now I hate it.

    Anyway, that’s what I wanted to say.
    xoxo

    @Amy

    Yeah, there are already GMAIL spambots like Maria said.

    @Maria

    Google Apps does look nice.

    Mari’s already got her four gmail accounts so she doesn’t need any more.

    It does get crazy when you have a bunch of email addresses.

    @Nathan

    Mari tried Vox, but it wasn’t that great. WordPress was way better, even wordpress.com was better.

    Just out of curiosity, what is the advantage of using gmail instead of hotmail, yahoo, etc.?
    Just wondering, because my brother uses it but I hadn’t even heard of it until he gave me his address. :P

    Unrelated to the post itself, but I’m liking the wallpaper you have there. Lol. Simpsons rock. I should check out if there’s a site with all of the episodes online like they have for Family Guy and South Park.

    @Abby

    It’s Google mail. It’s searchable and they’re constantly adding more storage space so you never have to delete stuff, well, that and it’s Google. Their motto is “Don’t be evil,” so…judge for yourself.

    @Maria

    XD Maria, that was a fun and random somewhat-unrelated comment. Mari has seen totally unreleated and that’s not it.

    They have episode guides on the official site, but Mari has yet to find a site with all the episodes online to watch. Mari’s stuck with her DVD sets. That, and the movie that Mari so wants to see tomorrow. Mari’s a big Simpsons Dork.

    I think it’s been open for a while now because when I registered I remember clicking around on google and setting it up. No one gave me an invite. Then again, I was trying to set up adsense so it’s possible that’s the only reason I got the gmail account without the invite?

    Gmail does get a lot of spam though. Thankfully it all helps the spam box only, but shesh, it’s the only account I have that hits the triple digits in spam in just a day and reaches the thousands in just a few. o.O

  • マリ on Reply to this comment

    @Joana

    Mari’s a little slow to notice, then. XD

    Perhaps. Once you have an account it’s pretty easy to navigate Google.

    Mari gets at least 2000 spams a day in two of her four accounts. Mari’s SPAM counts are through the roof.
