Earth Day 2007
In the U.S. and many other countries, it’s Earth Day today. A day to celebrate our planet. Most people don’t give a crap, and continue abusing the planet despite the holiday, but unless you have a plan to move to another planet in the next 50 years to avoid the horrible forecasted effects of Global Warming (or for those of us too biased to realize the gravity of those words -EARTHCANCERSCALDINGDEATH), Earth Day 2007 might just be the day to start caring.
Mari isn’t a constant environment nut, but on Earth Day she tries to be a little more considerate. Mari bought new, drastically more energy-efficient lightbulbs and cut down on her consumption of goods and services (also known as using things twice and not wasting water and electricity pointlessly).
If you’d like to be kind to your planet, a site you can visit to learn about why CFL lightbulbs are cool not only in appearance is 18Seconds.org. It only takes 18 seconds to change a lightbulb, and it really does something for the environment.
Here’s the U.S. Government site on Earth Day. It has some pretty helpful info as to what you can do at home, at work, and in school.
WikiHow has a slightly eco-nut-inspired version of how to celebrate Earth Day. It’s a good start if you’re really moved and want to make your whole life one big Earth Day celebration. Mari did do some of the more involved things mentioned in WikiHow. Mari’s wearing green and is trying to teach others about Earth Day. Mari also spent an hour this morning lecturing her mother on how wasteful she is. So maybe Mari is a closeted eco-nut? Hehehe…
If you’re a bookworm, maybe you could read Silent Spring to learn more about why being kind to the planet is cool?
Lastly, if you’re lazy and can’t really do anything else today, flip on your TV tonight (or catch it in reruns) and tune in to the Discovery Channel at 8pm to watch the finale ofPlanet Earth. The photography is really amazing, and unlike most documentaries, you’ll probably stay awake through a good portion of it. It’s a real treat for people who can appreciate good photography, and it truly shows you that there’s something left on this planet worth saving.
An interesting tidbit: International Earth Day, as celebrated by the United Nations was last month on the Vernal Equinox.
Now, Mari is off to pick up litter along her road.

Yay for Earth Day! I picked up litter from my yard and used as less energy and light as possible.
Eh I’m not so much of the earth day people. But then again there aren’t many resources out here to even recycle where I live :\
Hey Deanna. This is Shizune here! Sorry for being dead. xD
I think my school forgot it’s Earth Day today. -_- Then I reminded them and they were like: “OMG, it’s Earth Day? Ahh, who cares.”
Global warming is horrible and will happen soon D: I just hope people know that and do their part.
@Grace
Yay for Grace! Mari picked up litter along the road, then looked at her yard and decided to pick that up too. Mari’s brother is a messy man…
@the Geek Scene
Yeah, there’s no community-sponsored recycling where Mari lives, so Mari can’t recycle at this point. But when she gets a car she’ll start recycling.
@Aerith
Hey Shizune.
Most people are too lazy to be bothered. So when everything’s 20 degrees hotter in 50 years they’ll be like “Nothing we could have done…” And then Mari will slap them silly with a banana peel.
Hurrah for Earth day! Though, I didn’t do anything different yesterday. I always pick up litter from my yard (and sometimes even from the streets), use energy saving light bulbs, walk everywhere and so on. I might be a bit of an environment nut
@Kaisa
Yay, Kaisa is an eco-nut! =D
I like the bulbs. I only have two regular (50watt I think) bulbs in use in my apartment after having changed… about 10 bulbs in my apartment (all light fixtures, minus the two in the bathroom).
I love those little eco-friendly bulbs. =)
This might be a nice bit of (my local) news.
@Maria
We only have 11 more bulbs to change in our whole house, out of about 40 fixtures.
They look so cool, don’t they? =D
Interesting. That could only happen in California. Here in the wilderness the government essentially promotes harming the Earth.
