Aside from the tree thing I seem to recall somebody blogging about snowball slushies! That is something original and cool. Why not try adding a bit more of your own personal opinions, twists and facts to the news entries as well to give it a quirky tone? Frankly I don't mind the "regurgitated" news or the fun sites you find. I probably would not have found them otherwise.
