New Browsers Everywhere - What About Flock?
If you’ve read one tech/geek blog in the last month, I’ll bet you’ve read about the new versions of popular browsers Internet Explorer and Firefox. Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7 are both long-awaited updates in both browsers’ lines. IE 7 was released 18 October 2006, and Firefox 2 dropped 24 October 2006.
IE 7 finally introduces tabs, rss subscription, and search integration. The new look is very similar to Vista, glassy, and much sleeker than IE 6. All are welcome additions to the browser for the technically-inclined, but will the average IE user understand why these features are there? I doubt it. Also, IE 7 is still running on the IE 4 engine, and is still slower than Firefox.
Firefox 2 got a shiny glass GUI upgrade, as well as a notable integration of the session saver plugin that many people will find useful. A lot of Firefox plugins were broken with version 2, but the important ones are still functional. Firefox also now has a built-in spellchecker. This must be some deity’s way of telling us it’s okay to be stupid, there is a spellchecker for that.
So what about Flock? Should the Flockstars be expecting an update in the future?
According to this post on the Flock Blog, yes. Flock 1.0 is in active development, based off of Firefox 2.
In the meantime, we’ve got Flock 0.7.7 coming out by the end of this week with a routine maintenance update.

I use Firefox and Opera. I upgraded Firefox and it’s awesome.
Never heard of Flock so I’ll go check it out.
I use Firefox. Thanks for the link. (=
I use all three, but I use Flock regularly, and I test things in Firefox and IE 7.
I’ve been thinking about trying Opera, but I like Flock too much for it’s social and blogging features.
@Tuyet
I figured some people would need the links. You’re very welcome to them. =)
I use Firefox. There are less pop ups and stuff, and my computer always seems to freeze when I use IE.
Lots of stuff going on, they like to come out, at around the same time, see who can out do the other.
I currently still have the older version of FF, have not upgraded yet. I have heard there have been a few issues with it, and I hate errors, they make me cry.
I use Firefox primarily and maybe Internet Explorer (when I need to review a site or if a despair user can’t code in a cross browser environment *glare*), and sometimes Opera (cross browser compatibility purposes only).
Interesting new updates going on… I guess I’ll be downloading these as well. Never hear of Flock, I hope it is supported by Windows.
Hmm… about IE7, I heard it’s not particularly good… but then again IE in general is not particularly good.
@Charlotte
Sounds like you’ve got more problems than just IE. Maybe a spyware/adware/virus scan could help?
@Kya
Yeah, it’s got to be a “Browser War”. I haven’t seen any errors in Firefox 2 so far, or heard of any. If you’re talking about plugins, oh, BOY did they break. But I had too many installed already. Haha!
@Vera
Yeah, it annoys me too when someone codes for “IE-only”. Well guess what, IE kids? Your site is broken no matter what now! *cackling like a witch* When someone says their site is “IE-only” they are basically saying “I’m too dumb to learn to code correctly, so I’ll act like I’m being exclusive instead”.
Oh, yeah, Flock is supported by Windows. I’m running XP and I love Flock. =D
I use Firefox these days after having always used IE till a few months ago. I’ll have to get these updates though, even for IE, because I do check all my websites in IE, too.
Thanks for the links.
I use Firefox because IE is the devil. I upgraded to Firefox 2.0 but had to downgrade because my Verizon Wireless minutes plug in wasn’t working with 2.0 yet. I did love the spellcheck option though.
I’ve never heard of Flock either, I’ll have to check into that.
@Aemen
No problem. That’s what they’re there for! =D
@Chenoa
Yes, IE is the devil, haha! I still can’t figure out for the life of me why IE shows my clearly-the-same-color-as-my-images background color differently from my images.
Yeah, that’s a big problem with Firefox updates - the plugins NEVER work. As I understand it, that’s usually a problem with how the plugin was written.
Haha, I guess I’m a Flock PR girl now.
I use both IE, and Firefox. I tend to use firefox more when visiting personal sites / domains because the coded themes usually look like crap in IE.
I love the layout, though for some reasons rainy days make me sad =( Its great though! I use Mozilla Firefox all the time, I usually test things out in IE. I never heard of Flock =S IE really sucks though, my site sometimes looks bad in it.
I use IE, mainly because my internet provider is verizon with MSN, and when I sign online everything is conveniently available on their kicked up version of IE, or whatever you want to call it, by default. I also like to use firefox and opera.
I use Firefox 2 for my everyday browsing and coding needs, and all the extensions I use (currently 10) work in this new version. But, I also use Internet Explorer 7 and Opera 9 for cross-browser testing. I somehow gave up hacking CSS for Internet Explorer, though—gives me too much of a headache.
