Net Neutrality
If you aren’t five-pointed, pink, and living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Net Neutrality (what?). But you may not have done anything, or have dismissed it as a hoax. The problem with what is happening in D.C., according to the supporters of Net Neutrality is that the telecommunications companies could give priority to big-name sites which are able to pay them the most for a “fast-lane”, if Net Neutrality is taken out of our legislation. Trust me, the telecom giants are opening their pockets to your House Representatives and Senators, trying to sway them against Net Neutrality.
So, what about the little guy? How does this affect the everyday consumer? The Web 2.0 start-up, the personal domain, the lonely little blog with hardly any traffic? Your site.
You’ll be lucky if it loads at all, unless you have oodles of money to shell out to the telecommunications giants.
Think of it this way. Let’s say the Internet is a road. Right now we’re all on the freeway. We can go however fast we want, from wherever we start. A big site like Google could theoretically load just as fast as your personal site.
What the telecom giants want to do is create a different system. Sites that pay them the most money for the speed will be on a kind of “super freeway”, that allows those sites to go much, much faster than before. So now Cingular.com loads before you can blink. Okay, so that’s awesome if you’re trying to pay your bill online (kidding! Their site sucks!).
But what about your site? It’s on a dirt road, if that. You’re lucky if you’re even on a road. Heck, you’re lucky if you ever get to where you’re going. If your site loads at all, it’s a reason to rejoice.
“OMfgZ! That’s so wrong! What can I do to stop it?!”
Check out the Save The Internet Website.
Watch this YouTube video by the ninja from Ask A Ninja. (It’s hilarious.)
Watch this YouTube video by Rocketboom.com. It explains the issue really, really well.
Sign up your blog and write about this, link to their site, add them on Myspace, pass out flyers, call your senators, sign the petition…do anything you can.
Don’t be one of those people who says “Oh, how awful! That’s not right,” then sits back and does nothing. Do something. Anything.
Come on, SAVE THE FREAKING INTERNET. It’s not a joke, it’s not a hoax, this is real.

I actually have heard of net neutrality but never knew what it actually was, I’m glad to be enlightened. I’ll add something to the messageboard I’m a part of about it.
It’s so painful to read, and it makes me so mad! >:[ I’m not pleased with the government, not pleased at all.
Yes, that is awful.
